Business Report
The crazy consumer boom times of three years ago are unlikely to return anytime soon, with the majority of South Africans on all income levels continuing “to live like they are in the midst of a recession”.
That was the word from researchers at the University of Cape Town’s Unilever Institute of Strategic Marketing, which released the results of its latest study on the country’s consumer market in Durban yesterday.
THE FACE of South Africa's townships – and how people do business in them – are changing dramatically! This is confirmed by a number of research projects. Among them are projects by the University of Cape Town's Unilever Institute of Strategic Marketing and Foshizi Productions – founder of SowetoRocks.com website.
According to the researchers, Soweto shows the future of what all townships will look like. These new state-of-the-art malls in townships have brought a lot of shops that were never in the kasis before – like Alexandra's Pan Africa Mall. Some findings on these major changes will be released in Wake Up! Shake Up!, the Unilever study. It will be released by the UCT Unilever Institute of Strategic Marketing.
